How to Research an Industry Before You Invest

A simple method for understanding demand, competition and pricing.

Map the value chain

Write down who supplies raw materials, who manufactures, who distributes and who buys. Margins and power sit at different points of that chain.

Talk to buyers

Ten conversations with potential buyers will tell you more than a downloaded market report: what they buy, from whom, at what price and what they wish was better.

Study competitors

Look at capacity, pricing, channels and quality of the units already operating in your region.

Check regulation

Licensing, standards and environmental rules can change the cost and timeline of entry.

Write it down

Summarise demand, competition, pricing and risks in a short brief. It becomes the foundation of the feasibility study.
